March Mart Day 1

March Mart

One of the oldest and largest plant sales on the Texas Gulf Coast, March Mart 2020 will represent the 45th year March Mart has been held at Mercer Botanic Gardens. Starting out as a very small plant sale in 1975, a year after Harris County purchasing the property form Charles and Thelma Mercer, with volunteers bringing in plants that were divided or grown from seed in their own yards, the sale has grown to the two full day plant sale we have today, with thousands of plants to choose from. Mercer Botanic Gardens Staff and Volunteers work tireless to set up this sale and being you the best plants possible for the greater Houston area.

Education of guests is a key component of the activities at Mercer Botanic Gardens and this includes March Mart. With knowledgeable staff and volunteers on hand to answer questions concerning plants, the conditions in a particular yard and suggesting the best plants to work in that problem area, we continue to educate the public about the plant world.

Plants and Mercer Grown

Plants, plants an even more plants that is the main draw to March Mart, it is why we hold it and why you come. We will again have our main areas of plants; Annuals and Perennials, Trees and Shrubs, Roses, Shade, Edible-fruits-vegetables-herbs, Natives and Gingers. Click here for the varieties that will be sold at March Mart.

Many of our plats this year will be Mercer Grown as we concentrate on growing more and more plant material from seed, cuttings and divisions. Our “Northside” growing complex is very busy growing and tending for these plants.

VIP Member Event

Starting in 2016 we invited our supporting level and higher members to a very selective event focused on March Mart. By invitation those supporting members came to the Gardens for first choice shopping of all the plants being offered and a wonderful reception with a with wine and beer bar and more food than they could possibly eat. The Gardens are closed to the public, so the supporting members get an exclusive time in the gardens designed just for them. The reception area will be set up at the entrance to the formal garden and is a wonderful time to sit and talk with other garden supporters, The Mercer Society Board Members and the Mercer Botanic Gardens Staff. Not only do our supporting members get first choice the plants, but they also get a chance to purchase special specimens of plant life donated by the Gardens.

Food at March Mart

Two Food Trucks Soul Cat Cuisine (Friday and Saturday) and Mingo’s Latin Kitchen (Saturday) and Simply Sweet Kettle Corn will be available at March Mart. This is a popular addition to the event as it meant visitors can grab something delicious to eat, build up their strength to continue to shop for that perfect plant.

The Mercer Society will also set up Mercer Café and have drinks and snacks available for patrons all day. You will be able to grab a cup of coffee to start your morning and a bottle of water or a coke late in the day.
