In late June, the Mercer Society received notification that they were the fortunate recipients of a United Way of Houston Grant in the amount of $9000.00 to procure a self-contained educational unit for the Gardens, called a “Charlie Cart”. This cart not only acts as a portable classroom but is a mobile kitchen as well, complete with microwave, cooktop, sink, and refrigerator. Our younger. and older, visitors and students will learn not only how to plant and nurture a vegetable garden but how to take the plant from seed to harvest to table in one nutritious class.
The cart has been ordered and we are excitedly awaiting delivery in the early fall. Programs and events are being planned by the education department and staff of the Gardens to be staged for fall and our winter children’s school break workshops. More details will be published as soon as the cart is received and put into service. Many thanks and gratitude to the United Way for making this addition possible.
