Our Goal: Our Goal rests on four pillars: Engage.Preserve. Inspire. Rebuild.  Engage the community in a philanthropic partnership to Preserve Mercer’s botanical legacy, Inspire environmental stewardship as we Rebuild Mercer.

Our Purpose: The Mercer Society, through philanthropy,  supports the continued development of the Gardens while enhancing community awareness of Mercer Botanic Garden and its programs.

Our Mission

It is the mission of The Mercer Society to support the continued development of Mercer Botanic Gardens as a premier destination by promoting the importance of plant diversity, natural habitat, and botanical research while preserving this gem for generations to enjoy.

In 2015, The Mercer Society Board of Directors embarked on an ambitious journey that resulted in a Strategic Plan to guide future priorities, resources, and relationships. The Strategic Plan implements a major shift towards a more philanthropically-centric mission that will ensure a steady stream of appropriated resources, income, and contributions to provide long-term financial sustainability of The Mercer Society for the continued growth of Mercer Botanic Gardens and its programs.

As the Houston Chronicle reported “For three days in April, as much as 7 feet of rushing floodwaters inundated Mercer Botanic Gardens, which holds the region’s largest collection of native and cultivated plants.” Once the floodwaters receded, it was immediately apparent that the remaining devastation will take a number of years and substantial funding for Mercer to regain its former beauty.

The Mercer Society recognized the absolute need to secure the 30 plus acres of dry,  higher elevated land directly adjacent to the Garden. To meet this critical need, the Society has embarked on a multi-phased campaign to secure the site at a total price tag of $3.25 million. The initial phase, purchase of 10 acres, occurred in November 2016. The campaign continues to secure the remaining acreage.

A campaign of this scale requires community and financial support at all levels from visitors, supporters, educators, volunteers and community leaders to our robust corporate and philanthropic community.

The Land Acquisition phase of the “Rebuild Mercer!” Campaign will raise dedicated funds, to underwrite the multi-phased land project. We ask for and welcome your participation.
